Welcome

You're in the right place if…

You've been thinking about traveling — or even living — abroad, but you're not sure where to begin. Maybe you've seen a headline about retiring in Southeast Asia and thought, could that actually be me? Maybe you already have a destination in mind but need someone to tell you what it's really like on the ground.

This site is for independent-minded seniors 50+ who want honest, lived-experience guidance — not glossy travel brochures. I'm not going to tell you that everything is easy or that every place is perfect. I'm going to tell you what I actually know, because I've actually been there.

  • You're curious about slow travel, long-term stays, or living abroad — even if you're not sure yet whether it's right for you.

  • You want practical, real-world information — costs, healthcare, safety, logistics — not vague inspiration.

  • You'd rather hear from someone who's done it than read another generic "top 10 destinations" listicle.

Common Questions

The questions I hear most often

If you're hesitating, chances are one of these is why. Here's the honest answer to each.

Is it safe?

Yes — with the right preparation. I've lived alone as a solo woman across five Vietnamese cities and Thailand. Safety is about strategy, not luck, and I'll walk you through both.

Can I afford it?

Often more than you think. My monthly expenses in Vietnam are a fraction of what they'd be back home for most Westerners — with a better quality of life. I'll show you real numbers, not estimates.

What about healthcare?

This is the big one. Southeast Asia has excellent international hospitals, often at a fraction of what you'd pay at home. I've researched this city by city so you don't have to guess.

The Philosophy

Why slow travel —
and why it heals

Most people think of travel as a two-week escape. Slow travel is something different. It's choosing to stay long enough in a place to actually live there — to shop at the local market, know your neighbors, find your favorite coffee spot. To let the rhythm of a different place change your own.

That's the idea behind my book, The Slow Path to Wellness: How Slow Travel Heals at Every Age. Travel isn't just something you do. At the right pace, it's something that works on you.

"Slow travel isn't about the destination. It's about what happens when you stop rushing through it."

— Mary R. Johnson, Traveling Savvy Seniors

Lived Experience

Some of the places I've actually lived —
not just visited

I'm not writing about these places from a hotel room. Since January 2025, I've been slow traveling across Southeast Asia, living in each of these cities long enough to know what daily life really feels like at this stage of life.

Vietnam

Vung Tau

My current home — a beach city two hours from Saigon that most expats haven't discovered yet. Low cost, easy pace, beautiful coastline.

Thailand

Chiang Mai

Southeast Asia's most beloved expat city, and for good reason. I spent six months here. Here's what it actually taught me about slow travel — and aging.

Da Lat

A cool mountain city with French colonial charm, year-round mild weather, and a slower pace than anywhere else in Vietnam. A hidden gem for seniors who love culture without the heat.

Vietnam

Da Nang

The beach city with the infrastructure — modern hospitals, a real expat community, and the ancient Old Town of Hoi An just 30 minutes away.

Vietnam

Hanoi

Vietnam's capital: history, culture, and four distinct seasons. A city that takes a little more adjustment — but rewards it with depth that few places can match.

Vietnam

Ho Chi Minh City

The big city option — sprawling, electric, and home to the best international healthcare infrastructure in Vietnam. More than you expect. Less overwhelming than you fear.
